Government Study Guide
1. Legislative Branch- part of the United States government that creates laws.
2. General Assembly- world's forum for discussing matters affecting world peace and security, and for making recommendations concerning them.
3. House of Representatives- The lower house of the United States Congress.
4. Senate- the smaller upper assembly in the US Congress and most US states.
5. Speaker of the House- The presiding officer of the United States House of Representatives.
6. Majority leader- the head of the majority party in a legislative body, especially the US Senate or House of Representatives.
7. Minority leader- the head of the minority party in a legislative body, especially the US Senate or House of Representatives.
8. Floor leader- the leader of a party in a legislative assembly.
9. President of the Senate- pro tempore to preside in the vice president's absence.
10. Standing Committee- a permanent committee that meets regularly
11. Conference Committee- the Congress appointed by the House of Representatives and Senate to resolve disagreements on a particular bill.
12. Joint Committee- term that is used to refer to a committee made up of members of both chambers of a bicameral legislature.
13. Legislative Session- period of time in which a legislature is convened for the purpose of lawmaking.
14. Veto- a constitutional right to reject a decision or proposal made by a law-making body.
